Friendship Park has always represented something much larger than a single location. For more than 50 years, it has stood as a symbol of connection, reminding visitors that friendship, understanding, and community can transcend borders. In 2025, Friends of International Friendship Park expanded that vision beyond San Diego and Tijuana with the launch of Friends Across Borders—a new initiative designed to unite communities across North America through a shared commitment to peace, friendship, and cooperation.
Rather than focusing on one park or one border crossing, Friends Across Borders asks a simple question: What if communities across the continent celebrated international friendship together?
From a Local Landmark to an International Movement
For decades, Friendship Park has inspired people from around the world. Families have reunited there, artists have created there, and visitors have witnessed firsthand the importance of maintaining spaces dedicated to connection across borders.
Friends Across Borders builds on that legacy by extending the message of Friendship Park to communities far beyond the park itself. The initiative recognizes that while Friendship Park is unique, its values are universal. Every community has the opportunity to foster understanding, celebrate cultural exchange, and strengthen relationships across borders—whether those borders are international, cultural, or social.
By creating a network of organizations and community leaders committed to these ideals, Friends Across Borders transforms Friendship Park from a single destination into the inspiration for a growing movement.
Launching the First Celebration
On August 16, 2025, Friends Across Borders officially launched as a pilot initiative with an ambitious goal: to hold simultaneous celebrations of international friendship across North America.
The response exceeded expectations.
Community leaders organized events at 44 locations along both the U.S.–Mexico and U.S.–Canada borders. Although every celebration reflected its own local culture and community, they were united by a common purpose—celebrating friendship as a force that brings people together across borders.
Events included art exhibitions, community gatherings, cultural performances, educational activities, and opportunities for people to meet, learn from one another, and celebrate the relationships that connect neighboring communities.
Together, these events demonstrated that friendship is not limited by geography. It is something that can be celebrated wherever people choose to build bridges instead of barriers.
The Friendship Pledge
One of the defining moments of each Friends Across Borders celebration was the Friendship Pledge.
Participants gathered to affirm their shared commitment to friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect. While each community celebrated in its own unique way, the pledge created a powerful sense of unity across hundreds of miles.
The pledge served as a reminder that meaningful change often begins with simple commitments—to listen, to learn, to respect differences, and to work together toward a more connected future.
By participating simultaneously, communities became part of something much larger than a single event. They became part of a growing network dedicated to strengthening relationships across North America.
Building Partnerships
Friends Across Borders would not have been possible without collaboration.
The initiative brought together nonprofit organizations, artists, educators, community leaders, Indigenous partners, volunteers, and local advocates who all shared a belief in the importance of international friendship.
Each participating community contributed its own ideas, traditions, and perspectives, creating celebrations that reflected local cultures while supporting a shared continental vision.
This collaborative approach reflects one of the guiding principles of Friends of International Friendship Park: lasting change happens when communities work together.
Looking Toward the Future
The success of the 2025 pilot confirmed something Friends of International Friendship Park has long believed—people are eager for opportunities to connect across borders.
Friends Across Borders was never intended to be a one-time event. It was designed as the beginning of an expanding network of communities committed to promoting friendship, cultural exchange, education, and peace.
As the initiative grows, Friends of International Friendship Park hopes to welcome even more organizations, schools, artists, museums, parks, Indigenous communities, and civic leaders into the movement. Each new partnership strengthens the network while reinforcing the idea that international friendship is not simply an ideal—it is something that can be practiced through community action.
One Park, One Movement
Friendship Park will always remain at the heart of this work, but its message now extends far beyond the shoreline where the United States and Mexico meet.
Through Friends Across Borders, communities across North America are demonstrating that the values represented by Friendship Park—friendship, cooperation, respect, and shared humanity—belong everywhere.
What began as a single gathering place has become the inspiration for a continent-wide movement, proving that while borders may define nations, they do not define our ability to connect with one another.
As Friends Across Borders continues to grow, so does the vision that has guided Friendship Park for generations: a future where communities choose dialogue over division, partnership over isolation, and friendship above all else.
